My First Time Ever Watching Rocky IV | Movie Reaction
As a long-time fan of the Rocky franchise, I recently had the opportunity to watch Rocky IV for the first time. I had heard so much about this iconic film and its impact on the action movie genre, so I was excited to finally see it for myself.
The Plot
Rocky IV takes place during the height of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The film follows Rocky Balboa as he agrees to fight Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in an exhibition match, after Drago’s earlier fight results in the death of Rocky’s friend and former opponent, Apollo Creed. The stakes are high as Rocky trains vigorously to avenge his friend’s death and defend the honor of his country.
Initial Impressions
From the moment the film started, I was hooked. The fast-paced action and dramatic storyline immediately drew me in. The Cold War backdrop added an extra layer of tension that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the movie.
The Action Sequences
The fight scenes in Rocky IV were nothing short of exhilarating. The choreography and athleticism displayed by both Rocky Balboa and Ivan Drago were impressive, and the intensity of their rivalry translated seamlessly on screen. Each punch and knockout felt incredibly impactful, making the stakes of the final match even higher.
- The training montages were particularly memorable, showcasing Rocky’s determination and grit as he pushed himself to the limit in preparation for the fight.
- The final showdown between Rocky and Drago was a heart-pounding spectacle, with each round delivering more excitement than the last.
- The film’s action sequences truly set the standard for future sports dramas and action films.
The Emotional Impact
One aspect of Rocky IV that stood out to me was the emotional depth of the characters. The loss of Apollo Creed and Rocky’s subsequent quest for vengeance added a layer of complexity to the traditional sports movie formula.
- The grief and anger felt by Rocky and his friends were palpable, drawing me even further into the story.
- The film’s exploration of patriotism and unity was also incredibly moving, especially given the political tensions of the time period.
- Overall, the emotional impact of the film left a lasting impression on me.
The Music
The soundtrack of Rocky IV was a standout element of the film. The iconic training montage track “Eye of the Tiger” made a return, while new songs like “Burning Heart” and “Hearts on Fire” added an extra layer of intensity to the action sequences.
- The music perfectly complemented the high stakes and emotional beats of the film, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
- Each song captured the spirit of the characters and their journey, making the soundtrack a memorable aspect of the movie.
Legacy and Impact
After watching Rocky IV, I couldn’t help but reflect on its enduring legacy and impact on popular culture. The film’s themes of perseverance, patriotism, and the human spirit are timeless, resonating with audiences for decades.
- The film’s influence on subsequent action movies and sports dramas is undeniable, setting a high bar for both storytelling and action choreography.
- Rocky IV also served as a cultural touchstone during the Cold War era, reflecting the tensions and ideologies of the time in a compelling and accessible way.
- The character of Rocky Balboa has become an enduring symbol of determination and underdog spirit, inspiring countless viewers to overcome their own challenges.
Final Thoughts
Watching Rocky IV for the first time was a truly unforgettable experience. The film’s combination of thrilling action, emotional depth, and iconic music made it a standout entry in the Rocky franchise. Its impact on popular culture and its timeless themes continue to resonate with audiences, making it a must-see for action movie enthusiasts and sports fans alike.

There is a directors cut of this movie. In my opinion, it holds up to time a little bit better than the original cut. But I always say this version is required viewing for Rocky fans.
OMG yes!!! I have been waiting for you to react to this one
Just thinking about how sad Mick’s death made you and “just wait.”
Hi Jade hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
I live in Sweden. We've had -20 and snow this week.. come over ?
"Fun" fact: Stallone wanted some shots of him and Dolph actually fighting, like full contact boxing for authenticity. Dolph, 6' 5" and quite muscled, ended up sending Stallone to the hospital for like 10 days or so. o.O Stallone suffered something like inflammation of the sack containing the heart due to Dolph's punches, and iirc the doctors initially thought Stallone had been hit by a car. :O
Hello adorable Aussie girl how are you ?
I saw this back in OZ like 25 years ago .
Great movie !
"I will break you !"
Have fun watching this girl.
See ya !
yes, Jade, u can keep fighting if u caused serious injury and death in the ring. its literally in each fighters' contract and licence that they accept the risks of potential harm. its an avoidable consequence of such combat sports. it is quite rare but has happened in boxing on more than a few occasions. Michael Watson is an extremely well known case of a top fighter becoming paralysed because of a fight. in the 60's I know a fighter called benny paret died a few days after the fight due to injury. I'm not sure of others, but I'm definitely sure there were more deaths
loving watching u on the rocky journey, such a pleasant soul and very cute ? keep up the good work work miss
did you no that Dolph also played He-Man ??
He damn near got killed on this one!
The Creed films follow directly on from the 6th Rocky film. All part of the same series.
the robot is so stupid but it was the 80s
5 isn't up to par. Can probably skip it. Lol. Unless you mean to do the whole series.
On the plane ride home they go through a quantum flux and his kid ages 7 years.
I reckon the 4th Rocky movie is my 2nd favourite. You're getting closer to the end now Jade but don't forget the Creed movies ?
There is a Director's Cut that came out a few years ago that has more of the sentiment that you seek It also doesn't have the Robot. You also get more off Apollos Trainer who gives a speech at the funeral and more scenes to flesh out his grief.
You sweèt, from Italy ❤
What has been your favorite in the series so far?
I live in West Central Canada normally this time of year we should have at least 18 inches of snow and temperature of -25/-30 C,but we have no snow and it's 3C

And there we go again… for the most epic one.
I’m 52 and grew up on Rocky. Your reactions are so precious. I wish my daughter would get into the Rocky franchise like you. She lost interest after the first one LOL
