I'd do think the show will get better as it goes on
I’ll say this. I know the whole dynamic with Suki and Sokka is different. But tbh, based on how she has grown up, and all that. It lowkey makes more sense for her to be the way she is. (Animation version still better). But I didn’t dislike how they did it
I will say…..I was hoping they would include a brief glimpse of the guy that screams and foams at the mouth when they come to kyoshi island lol
Great review, I love you thought about it and presented your opinions in a fair way. As for the comet, the reason it’s not mentioned is specifically because of the “ticking clock”. No spoilers: They ended the season in way that allowed for the cast to grow up between now and if we get a second season. In the original series this all took place within a year, and Gordon (Aang) isn’t exactly 12 anymore. ? They said they moved the comet revelation, so it wasn’t the focus for this season. That’s probably why Kyoshi warned Aang about the incoming attack, to give this season a bigger motivation to get to the water tribe sooner than later. In a separate note, I love this version of Zhao (and the actor) and the way he’s more portrayed as more of a scheming snake behind the scenes. It’s just fun to see what he’ll do next, and the way in which he will do it. I think the change works for the unique world the live action is building. ?
Kyoshi's a menace to society and I absolutely love that. I'm happy with the change of the avatar possession scene in the winter solstice being Kyoshi instead. I've been craving more of her.
New subscriber! Great commentary! You hit all the beats I did too haha and I agree with alot of what you said. I like that you are also letting the show be its on thing and appreciating it for what it is ( acting , visuals , story, relationships) but you are also good at noting inconsistencies or things that seem out of place and youre also good at comparing it just enough to the orignal to give good insight. Looking forward to your ep 3 and for 4 reactions!
its not a book… its the note book of Zuko, he researched the Avatar, and all the things Aang should have learned from selected Teachers in his day, which he didnt get the opportunity, is partly in the note book which he stole from Zuko. i find it totally plausible, and logical. he didnt know anything cos his elders didnt know shit would hit the fan, and thus didnt pressed the issue cos he was to young.
well chin the conqueror was tiny man in the animated series, apparently 4'5.
unofficially its said she was 6'5-7 (198-213cm) tall, but in the Legen of Kora we see how she is similar height like Roku, but some say Roku was 6'8 (207cm) and she was 2 inches shorter aka 6'6(202cm).
but Aang also dosnt look compared to them short, and he supposedly was 6'3 (190cm)..
i think they where never consisten with heights cos it wasnt a pressing issue for a kids show.
and even a 6 feet (184cm) realistic height person looks like a giant compared to 4'5 (135cm)
I honestly think Sokka is taking the lead role cause he’s the oldest actor and is somewhat able to carry Aang and Katara
This is a little glimpse into what it will look like when Aang fight the Fire Lord in the last episode as a fully realized Avatar. It is going to look really good.
I wasn't sure about Sokka in episode 1 but the actor won me over in this episode. He nailed the character's attitude so well and I actually chuckled out loud at certain points. I really enjoyed the dynamic they built between him and Suki too, both actors had amazing chemistry with each other and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them later. Also it was awesome finally getting to see the Kyoshi Warriors in live-action, they were always my favorite and I loved how badass they looked
Why does the actor who plays Sokka remind me of Jared Padelecki, looks wise.
I think some of the changes are the result of going from 20 short episodes to 8 longer ones. Multiple animated episodes that took place in different locations are being combined into a single live action episode. Rather than have the characters travel to multiple locations within a single episode, the showrunners decided to just have the stories occur in the same place, which meant that some changes had to be made in order for things to make sense. I've only watched the first 4 episodes so far, but I think they've done a good job of combining things and have no problems with the changes that have been made.
Suki: ???
Sokka: ???
Omn1: ??????
I think the moment where Aang turns into Kiyoshi is also a refrense to the episode where Aang got arrested at a village because Kiyoshi killed there leader and this reminds me of that moment.
This show doesn’t have shit on the original. Some of the castings are fantastic, and others are HUGELY miscast. We got discount Katara instead of a girl who knows how to act. We got characters that were teased at the end of season 1 or even introduced in season 2, that are introduced almost straight away in this first season… Azula in episode 3?? The fuck!? ??♂️ They couldn’t even wait and just had to show firelord Ozai in episode 3 as well?? Instead of teasing him and building towards his reveal at the end of the season….That’s what was great about the og cartoon, they built him up and teased him in the background, but here there is no buildup or anticipation. It’s just bam there he is, right next to Walmart Azula. What she gonna do, foodbend her way to victory? ??♂️ That actress does not embody the character at all, looks nothing like her and acts nothing like her, I bet a cosplayer could deliver better acting… terrible miscast. Don’t even get me started on Ty Lee and Mai… oh god what is that actress doing playing Mai? ? The three of them couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag, and they look THE LEAST like their animated counterparts. Why bring them in a whole season early anyway? Rather than take the time to cast those characters properly. It’s crazy how people will acknowledge the excellent casting of Aang, Zuko and Sokka, but won’t acknowledge the horrible miscasts of some of the female actresses. ??♂️
Even commander Zhao sucks ass, has no intimidation AT ALL. He feels like he belongs in the live action movie. ? Iroh looks the part, but unfortunately does not act the part. Honestly they’ve changed things that did not need to be changed, and have NOT improved the story by doing so. Aang meeting Kyoshi before Roku? Why? Downgrading part of what made the OG story work so well. This is the kind of crap I’d expect from the Disney channel. Sorry but I wont be watching season 2, which hopefully it doesn’t get the green light for anyway.
I didn’t think it was clunky but that’s me
Learning information from the book I think makes sense for this Aang as they have shortened the amount of time between Aang learnign he's the Avatar and leaving. In the original, there was time inbetween to learn more about the Avatar. Here, he's told and goes immidetely, so this Aang literally only knows what Gyatso told him in that one conversation and nothing else.
Also, giving Kyoshi this moment I think is a really nice way of immidetely contrasting E1's end (here's the danger of an uncontrollable Avatar State), and E2 (here's the possibilites of a controlled Avatar state). I also really like them tackling into the expanded media that's out now, like they've admitted the Kyoshi backstory in this episode is based on the Kyoshi novels that came out.
I started cracking up with you during the Sokka half naked scene.?
Suki’s mom is played by Tamlyn Tomita— Kumiko from Karate Kid II
No I think Katara speech is not about just bending. Their life's changing, that's her point
Everything and everyone is working so far with their adaptation of the series, especially Sokka and Zuko, but I'm seriously not liking the performance for Katara, it's a bit lackluster and uninspiring, very monotone.
Nothing against the actor, but imo Zhao was horribly miscast
His voice is too weak, and he's too casual with the role
Zhao is supposed to be a challenge to Zuko, this Zhao just feels weak
It's definitely my least favorite part of the series
Lalike u"ve watch avatar mulitple times. I'm happy that there's changes. Makes it feel new
I think them going to kyoshi island to learn about the avatar state made sense because it stems from the danger they experienced during Aang’s avatar state in the southern air temple. They talked about him needing to learn how to control it. Sokka even joking ‘before he kills somebody’. And they went to Kyoshi Island because Aang saw it on Zuko’s note (haha nice little detail that Zuko is super obsessed with the avatar) that Kyoshi has mastered the avatar state. And in that episode, kyoshi demonstrated the importance of the avatar state, noting that it can even save his life (which was seen in the first episode where he trapped himself in ice).
Yeah Kataras line could have been better about helping Aang. They were probably trying to go for, he’s inspired Katara, brought back hope to her and the world. She can’t put the lid back on, theirs no turning back, this is important, etc. etc. Heck, Katara did the biggest move during the attack for the first time probably because sometimes that’s how greatness comes out of us. When we’re not thinking, we just do it out of necessity.
Aang’s words might have gotten her out of her own head for the first time and it makes sense I’m mean he’s the first bender she’s talked to in a long time if not ever especially about her own bending abilities. I’m sure she feels stunted since her mother died. I mean she’s been practicing secretly so not much but I’m sure she has felt that she could’ve made more progress even on her own and is disappointed and frustrated with herself. She needed something, someone, anyone to get her out of her rut
Gosh I start off critiquing and speculating and end up getting caught up in the beautiful message that is in there ??
The really heavy emphasis on Kyoshi in the first two episodes leads me to believe that Netflix is already prepping to adapt the Kyoshi novels….which I would not complain about.
