Am I the only one who feels like the camera direction is weird? At times it actually felt like I was watching the 2010 movie. So many shots are just weird. Is it a Netflix thing? I feel like maybe I just grew up watching movies and shows that were shot very well to the point of taking for granted how natural they felt and now it's easy for me to feel that something is off when the camera direction isn't the best? And if it feels off, it can ruin the whole project for me. I'm not an expert tho so idk lol
Only watched a few episodes but for now the show is a meh for me, as I expected there's a few things I like, the rest is pretty bad. I wouldn't watch it if I didn't know the original show, that's for sure. I'm just watching to see how they do things out of curiosity. I never really cared for a live action anyway so eh, I do hope the people who were looking forward to it enjoy it tho ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The fact that Gran Gran revelaed Aang as the avatar instead of Aang revealing it himself when defending the water tribe from Zuko TOTALLY deflated the impact of that scene
I see this as Aang not flying, but being able to hover for a few seconds without the glider. Honestly, we know Aang can send himself 20 feet in the air with a sneeze. Floating around for less than 10 seconds isn't that big of a deal. I can push the elliptical treadmill to read over 1000 Watts for that long. Plus, Aang is as powerful as any adult aairbender while weighing like 70 lbs.
26:03 I think he’s doing an air tornado to levitate we just can’t see that well cause it’s in live action and you can’t see air. He’s not flying anything like Zaheer.
Can you like shut up and let the scene play out. I hate reviewers who just watch material for the sake of critiquing. Youre not watching the show for the sake of viewership and enjoying it. Youre nitpicking.
It's not bad, but in comparison to the source material I just feel like it doesn't even come close to making justice, I can't help comparing it and almost every choice to remove something was bad, and additions were also kinda weird
Glad I wasn't as biased as you while watching that I could sit back and enjoy this series. The nitpicking about the smallest of things that don't matter was exhausting to hear. I watched this season by myself and with friends, we literally weren't this critical as if every scene were as bad as Madame Web. I'm an OG fan and while I have a few issues with show, it ultimately was a good faithful adaption.
My thoughts exactly with the flying scene in the beginning. "Whoa there. If you show him literally almost flying in the first scene, people who don't know what's happening here will think that they all can fly and there's no point to having a staff."
It feels like the changes they made to the source material were like copying Wikipedia and changing the phrasing. The additions were solid, I agree. It’s mid imo. Not bad enough to not watch but certainly less good so as to give me mixed feelings
Watched all 8 Episodes. My score for the series is a 9/10 across the board. Definitely recommend, will be showing and watching with my 8yr old daughter once she is home from school on Friday and over the weekend. 1) The air nomad deaths are shown, so to adults, watch first 20 minutes before kids. Otherwise kids can watch once Aang is in ice. 2) This is not a copy of the original. 8 Live action episodes to tell story of 20 cartoon episodes. Episode 6 of original cartoon looks like it will be in season 2 of the live action. Season 2 episode 2 of original cartoon is added into season 1, instead of episode 6. 3) The first episode is the first 3 episodes together with the deaths of the air nomads. 4) Original cartoon Episodes 4, 5, 7-10, 12, 13, 15, and 17 have their essential episode essence represented, in episodes 2 through 6 of the live action. A lot of things are re-ordered. Some things are expanded. You will see parts of things from a recognizable episode mashed with events from other episodes. 5) Watch the entire thing BEFORE judging. Sometimes you will think something was forgotten only to learn, that the other parts or viewpoints of a given episode are in a follow-up episode. The way the episodes are mashed together means the story jumps between events of various episodes, so the representation of one episode might occur across 2 or 3 episodes; or there may be an intervening episode. 6) Do Not PreJudge. The format is different than the original cartoon, initially the order will seem odd. Just hang in with it, overall it does work. 7) Episodes 11, and 14 are not shown, but pay attention anytime Zuko, Iroh, or Zhou get a report. The events of those episodes are mentioned but it’s a one time blink, or talk and you will miss it. These episodes have indirect representation in the series. The honorable mentions in the reports made me laugh while watching. 8) The Jeong Jeong part of Episode 16 might occur in season 2, or 3 without Zhou. Jeong Jeong is not in season 1 of this live action. He has not been cast yet. 9) The last 2 episodes of the Netflix Live action have been mashed together, the mashup reorders the events of original cartoon episodes 18-20. The Katara vs Paku fight is Wow! 10) Koh will appear far earlier than expected. and not when or how fans expect. He is still a creepy, freaky, and dangerous spirit. They expand Koh’s role to include some of the lore with him from the comics as well. He is voiced by George Takei (Sulu from 1966 Star Trek). 11) The original voice actor of the cabbage man, plays and is, the cabbage man in this Netflix live Action series!! 12) The previous 3 avatars and ocean spirit La, at points will be given permission by Aang to use him as a channel. Kyoshi is obvious. Many people apparently missed when Roku did so. Pay attention, do not miss it by talking or by being distracted by what Roku is showing and teaching Aang. Kurik will refuse. La’s turn is OBVIOUS. 13) Azula’s machinations are definitely as evil as Ozai’s. Yes Azula learns lightning bending before the end of season 1. She is far darker than the original cartoon.
Its not that I want live actions to be a failure its just as someone who genuinely enjoys animation/ adult animation it is discouraging to see the future pushing these genres out ?
You immediately handicap your show when you hire an inexperienced actor for any role. Especially since they put more focus into hiring ethnically and characteristically accurate actors (as they should have, I’m not advocating for changing the characters race) over acting ability. If they hired a white aang, cue riots. If they aged up the cast to find better actors, cue riots. I mean, Sokka almost got changed cause people said his actor faked being indigenous. I feel very confident the acting will improve as Aang and Katara actors get older.
Thank you for pointing out all the things that feel wrong here. I couldnt continue watching it, and hearing you having a deep background in the original and putting what I was feeling into words so precisely feels really good. Subscribed!
Katara, both the characterization and acting are the biggest vibe kills for me. She’s not well written, the performance is very rough, there’s not much katara there at all
So I feel like, this is kind of like if you read the book and then watch the movie the movie’s not gonna be the same. For those who watch the cartoon that’s always going to be better. I think they did really good with the show. Just like if I read a book, there is some lines/scenes that I wish were in it but I think they also did really well with this. Except for may, I’m not gonna forgive that. But we’re not there yet, so don’t worry about it.
Katara and Aang having no real friendship or bond was the worst part for me. The second she didn’t pull him out of the avatar state in episode one I know this was gonna blow. And it did lmao
You said, "What about the original Harry Potter movies?" Like… dude, the kids in those movies were SOOOO BAD in the first like 3 movies. They didn't get good until later. I think they grew up to all be fantastic, but they were NOT that good in the beginning. lol
its like they want to make the show so gritty and “adult” but they refuse to treat the audience like adults. none of the characters feel human or like they care about each other. atla is a masterclass of subtle characterisation that they completely missed here.
Katara feels really stiff and dull tbh the acting is just bad Sokka is already the way he acts at the end of Atla bc they changed his character and destroyed any possible character development Zuko i was worried about but I’m ngl I really enjoyed him.. also him and Iroh together is always good imo Aang was fine ig..
I don't understand the hate you are throwing with this video. It has been taken from a CHILDRENS cartoon show. The actors are exactly the age they should be and everyone fits their role. Small changes for better distribution of the episodes & plot are nothing to be hating on. If you all never had expectations at all just Don't watch it. Paul Dallas & Ian have the most important roles & they nailed. Did you even watched the last episode? That cinematography for a Netflix show of a Cartoon was the best thing. And don't lie when you say it didn't bring you to tears or MAYBE you were never a fan of the cartoon to begin with. Give some credit to these people and stop being delulu and arrogant like you could do better than them. We are not professionals we are just fans who want to enjoy it.
i don't think Aang is flying the way Zahere did, you can see air moving around him, hes made a little tornado to lift him off the ground, Zahere was straight levitating with no issue, never having to physically bend, he was able to float and meditate, Aang is actually bending there
I think what netflix should’ve done was analyse the chamalon movie to observe his own mistakes so that they don’t REPEAT those mistakes. Like watching video essays on YouTube, reviews, critiques, criticisms, etc etc and attempt to avoid those mistakes and see what to do with their own show. I think focusing on the characters should be the main thing since the characters are (debatably) the most important part of any show or story whether it’s a movie, cartoon, live action, rewritten, etc. the costumes, cast, designs, stuff like scars and tattoos and facial features, then focus on the background and setting along with the bending, idk I feel like the chameleon movie could’ve helped them SO MUCH in observing the mistakes and making their adaption better. I also think the actors were a major bad choice, I feel like when you act a character you have to KNOW the character and their personality by heart to really know how to interpret it. Take Margot Robbie for example when she played harely Quinn, she read every comic and watched every media that involved harely Quinn whatsoever and even observed her accent and the way she spoke and her mannerisms, body language, outfits, style, etc.
I'm sorry but I've been waiting like 3 months now and you keep adding new shows to your reactions…which is nice. But please finish black butler. There is just one more movie. PLEASE ITS THE BEST part of black butler next to book of circus imo.
A Korra live action would have been way more appreciated, since that show deals with more mature themes at times and you know, the characters are actual adults. Not to mention unlike the childlike Aang, I feel like an actress portraying Korra would be able to improve on the character compared to the animation.
I think the live action is pretty decent. Honestly, they did a pretty great job on everything except Bumi, and it's a little rushed. Otherwise? Pretty much the same, some improvements on grittiness, some detriments concerning character development.
I gotta disagree with you a bit here bro this is good it’s not great , but yeah gran gran is bad choice katara isn’t great either everyone else is not bad at all I think the show was good 7/10 and not 5/10 liek many claim
This has potential, we need katara to have more emotions and anng to be more humorous they did it a bit but not enough, zuko was good anng was pretty good ngl , we need the passion !! I want to see anng and team avatar too have a full filler episode in season 2 instantly building there relationships !! Besides that I liked it a lot there’s a lot of potential!! 5,6,7,8, it definitely picks up
I was so critical of it at first because I was just comparing every single change but then there was a particular scene in episode three where I was like why am I even doing this yk like it’s a whole different thing. And then there was I think it’s episode six or seven I was like “holy shit that’s such a good storyline to add” But God i love seeing you compare everything no joke bc that’s what my mind was screaming at me to do and u do it in such a funny way while spitting facts ?
I hate the change to Aang discovering he was the avatar and needed to leave home bc it robs us of the realization Gyatzo was going to spirit him away from the temple. Aangs father couldn't bear to see his son so thoroughly isolated but was tragically seconds too late in showing him just how much he actually cared.
Am I the only one who feels like the camera direction is weird? At times it actually felt like I was watching the 2010 movie. So many shots are just weird. Is it a Netflix thing?

There were good and bad things about this adaptation. And then there was Yue's design…. She looked like a super cheap first time cosplayer :/
I see this as Aang not flying, but being able to hover for a few seconds without the glider. Honestly, we know Aang can send himself 20 feet in the air with a sneeze. I like the way you explained this
It's not bad, but in comparison to the source material I just feel like it doesn't even come close to making justice, I can't help comparing it and almost every choice to remove something was bad, and additions were also kinda weird

well out of everything I'm glad Appa's been keeping up with his mewing
I love it! I'm baffled by the hate for it
Honestly, Sokka in this did way better against Zuko than animated Sokka did
How on earth can you say it looks bad???
My thoughts exactly with the flying scene in the beginning. "Whoa there. If you show him literally almost flying in the first scene, people who don't know what's happening here will think that they all can fly and there's no point to having a staff."
People want this to be great so bad but honestly it's mid. Terribly mid.
Episode three and four are 10 times better and my honest opinion are the best episodes of the entire series
It feels like the changes they made to the source material were like copying Wikipedia and changing the phrasing.
The additions were solid, I agree. It’s mid imo. Not bad enough to not watch but certainly less good so as to give me mixed feelings
as a person who has finished it already 7/10 is enormously generaous

No cause I love how when zuko finally met his obsession (aang) he went straight to drawing fan art?
i feel like all of their budget went towards the opening scene ?
