The film introduces the perplexing concept of solo space missions, a narrative choice that, when examined through the lens of rationality, leaves one scratching their head. In the realm of reality, NASA would likely protest such a venture, as future space missions are steering clear of the solitary astronaut model for reasons that are self-evident.
The portrayal of the protagonist's journey, coupled with the mundane machinery and solo flight, unfolds next to his mental struggle that manifests in his arachnid vision of a 'Giant space spider,' who becomes his sole companion and onboard psychologist. This surreal relationship adds a layer of psychological complexity to the narrative, as the astronaut engages in introspective conversations with his eight-legged confidant, blurring the lines between reality and the hallucinatory realm of deep space. The 'Giant space spider' becomes both a metaphorical reflection of the protagonist's isolation and a whimsical coping mechanism, turning the otherwise dreary mission into a surreal and, at times, hilariously absurd cosmic therapy session.
Spaceman doesn’t bog you down with an hour of backstory, instead choosing to be slow with reveal for dramatic effect. On the surface we have the story of a lonely cosmonaut missing his wife when he finds a giant arachnid on his ship. Where we find the dive deep is in exploration of the human condition. Our reasons to hold on to pain, lengths we go to for absolution, and the self-imposed limitations within our relationships. In a scene which features Paul Dano’s Hanus discussing with our protaganist Jakub why he has chosen to leave his pregnant wife in favor of the mission he poses the questions, “What for? The pain that it causes, is it of value to you?”
The VFX team here is certainly to be applauded, as well as Max Richter who is responsible for scoring the film. I can’t be certain that Interstellar was inspiration to his soundtrack but I’d put a little money on a friendly bet I’m right. If you have ever found yourself lost or lonely this film will likely blindside you emotionally. When it comes down to it Spaceman seems like a bit of a fever dream-right down to the vague yet tied-with-a-bow (maybe?)happy ending.
Very very nice thoughtprovoking movie that won't be liked by an audience that doesn't want to be provoked. It is far from boring but if you're used to mindless and tasteless 'entertaiment' and fall asleep while watching this particular movie then go ahead and look at something more 'interesting'. At least then you won't feel like you've waisted money or time…
Inspired by movies like 'Cast Away' and 'Interstellar' this movie is in fact a great achievement and I love it. I would suggest to embrace the unknown and to not judge by first impression. The silence (loneliness) is exactly the point, it confronts with the inner self, a space that might be just as vast and unknown as the outer space. In this space everything that has ever been felt, heard and seen builds up and it does determine who we are and how we behave.
Amazing movie and one of Sandlers top performances by far
This not a funny dumb movie that everyone links him to… this is serious and very emotional to people that care for someone.
Adam is great at giving a serious role I ignored the bad reviews and went in with an open mind and took away a serious sense of fixing the way live my life with my partner.
Once again some will enjoy others will not…. Take this movie and enjoy the journey and message that goes with it.
Love your partner for today and always remember to be patient and find the time to do what really matters for each other..
Unlike his other films, this one is as artsy as they get, featuring all mood and no humour.
In fact, it contains a number of enigmatic scenes that seem more designed to frustrate the viewer than to actually tell an interesting story.
There is lots of talk about the romance of the lead characters (played by Sandler and Carey Mulligan), used to have, but the flashback scenes that show their life together are impossible to decode.
It doesn’t help that those scenes are shown through a weird, blurry filter that almost makes it look like we’re viewing it through water!
I’m going to be honest, I was way more captivated by the relationship between Adam Sandler and a CGI spider…
I watched this movie with my partner and it made me realise that I really do love this person and you really have to cherish the people you love because they could be gone at any moment. Especially now that we live in a world where people don’t understand what it truly is to be a family and to love each other. We are not perfect but that is not an excuse to not try to see who we’ve hurt and fix it, we have enough time to change we just need to open our eyes to it.
If you don't see the point of the movie then you haven’t had a reason to love, to change and to cherish.
When I say this is the best movie ever I mean it. The story takes you on a wild ride from laughing to crying to overcome with grief. I kid you not by the end of this movie I was balling. Like full on balling. Tears streaming down my face with a mother loade of tissues in hand. I’m 87% sure I used the entire box. Days after I watched it I still thought about it. I thought about what Adam Sandler said at the beginning of the movie whenever he was talking to his pet alien. He said “No matter what you say or do I will always be your spaceman.” WOW if that isn’t cinema gold then I don’t know what is. GO WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
If you like this movie you have too much estrogen and emotional problems. To sum up the movie he goes to space and misses his girlfriend and gets emotional support from a giant spider alien that talks. The ending is horrible and the rest of it’s pretty bad too. My upmost respect to everybody who was involved in making this because I know it requires a lot of hard work and resources to make a movie like this but honestly they should’ve laid off the shrooms a bit. I watched it till the end because I figured it will get better and then it ended. I’ve been staring at a blank tv screen for the past hour contemplating why I just wasted my night watching this. I have never written a negative movie review before and I don’t plan too in the future, I’m a very positive person, but this one just hurt to watch. The worst part is they roped Adam Sandler into this and he was In my top 5 favorite actors but this just ruined his image.
It’s a movie about rejection and abandonment. A journey into the self. To recognise the weaknesses from childhood traumas we suffer and how it affects our relationships in the now. Closeness to another person with a brain that has suffered trauma can be overwhelming and the process of becoming close to someone to fix that pain becomes overwhelmed with traumatic fears that one will be rejected again. Then the process of abandoning oneself begins.
There’s a spiritual element in this movie. The journey to Chopra represents a journey of rebirth. It is the end of Jakub and the beginning of one that has understood the complex workings of his mind. Thus becoming reborn with knowledge on how to control that trauma, the damaged neural pathways, and begin his life again reborn.
Some people achieve this rebirth in different ways. Some people find religion. Or purpose in vocation. Personally I found that through psychedelics.
This is the story I take away from it.
I loved it. It resonates with me. It will resonate with many people.
I loved the story, the characters, the deep connections they all had, and the premise.
I loved the spider character who is likely in the spacemans mind. Very beautiful. Adam was great in this film.
Oooh and the scenes!!! So beautiful!!! Amazing set. Loved the colors and the film itself.
My only concern was the story revolved around codependency. Ofcourse it's very meaningful to say "you're all I need in this world, and you are my world" but don't make your life all about that one person. You need to have a life too.
I recommend for space genre lovers. And loners who work graveyard shifts.
It's a loner feeling that can't be explained. I felt the movie as if I was in the ship myself. I'm a loner in this giant world full of people and everyday I wish I felt more hope, but I feel like I'm lost in the abyss waiting for something better that may never come. No matter how hard you try that you're always doing something wrong. Nothing ever feels right. Nobody will understand how you feel. I felt this in the movie. I felt hope that you can come out of the abyss and things can eventually go in the right direction for you. Sometimes you just have to go thru some really tough lonely times to get to that point. I can't explain how it made me feel better completely, but it definitely made me feel not as alone.
The movie is obviously about one thing. You can not put your job over your lover or your lover over your job. You can not have your cake and eat it too! One comes first over the other. There is no balance! If you try to balance your lover with your job you will lose your lover to the one who puts your lover first over their job and vice cersa. You don't put your job first? Someone else will get it! You don't put your lover first? Someone else will get them! Whatever your priority in life, you better be willing to accept the consequences! People say balance is key but not always! Sometimes you have to go hard or go home or go home and not go hard! But hey, to each their own!
this movie will be a niche cult classic. i already rewatched it 2 times. i dont get the ratings for it. its one of the most beautiful & melancholic yet hopeful movies i ever saw. the OST is sublime

This is not a movie about space.
This was so unexpectedly good.
To start, great film work and really different interesting vision through spider eyes in parts.
This is an emotional trip of understanding and honesty.
But put in a whole different way that really was as weird as it was great.
But I like weird, thought provoking stuff.
This is not a movie to watch for fun.
Best watched alone when you can get lost in what's going on
