Hey Kazzy, I enjoyed your reaction a lot. Many people gloss over how Mal makes that important distinction between Inara as a person versus her chosen profession. I always thought it was a very integral part of the show, and I'm glad you noted that so clearly. Stay well.
Thanks for sharing your reactions with us; I find myself counting the days for your next installment. ?
My take: Mal has feelings for Inara, but understands any involvement would be problematic with her career – and he has too much respect for her as a person to think about interfering with her choices. So his frequent comments/criticisms about 'whore academy' etc… are one of his ways (possibly not even conscious) to keep her at arms length. Especially since he doesn't really suspect that his feelings might be reciprocated.
One of my favorite reactions to watch is to Firefly. And I have yet to hear anyone claim they didn't like this song. Most people start off hating it and mocking it… but they eventually grow to love it.
6:03 Don't let US/Canadian prejudices cloud your judgement – there are cultures in history that had similar concepts as the Companion concept in Firefly. Even today and even in the USA with its prudish views people make a difference between high class escorts and the more common streetwalkers – that's not the same thing.
The companion role was obviously modeled on the Geisha and probably similar Chinese courtesans since this is supposed to be a mixture of Chinese/Western future culture. But no I doubt most women would ever respect courtesans simply from jealousy.
Mal does "specify" he doesn't respect her profession but he respects her. It isn't a "good" distinction but it is one in his mind. And kind of explains things.
Mal see her a "too good" for the work… in some ways.
I do love the "its the mark of a great man… well I'm alright."
I love this episode. The highlight was Kaylee and that dress. It was so completely her. And I have read and seen Memoirs Of A Geisha, many years ago. It definitely gave me a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture and customs, especially having been stationed there my last two years in the Navy(2004-2006). Japan is a place I would go back to in a heartbeat.
A tyro has literally zero chance against a skilled, cool swordsman. Mal is only alive because Atherton wanted to show off and toy with him. Had he simply walked towards Mal and extended his sword, then Mal would have swiped at it. He could then have simply dropped his point under Mal's blade and lunged, passing the sword through Mal's heart. Or throat. Or eye socket. Epee fencers can hit bouncing ping pong balls with the point. If he really wanted to be careful then stab Mal in the foot, a primary target in Epee. Then just circled him until he fell down, lost consciousness and died soon after.
Jewel plays Kaylee really well. She really sells it about how much Kaylee loves that dress and strawberries. Jewel hates both irl, lol, but you'd never know.
3:15 Inara loves Serenity and would never want to be a permanent Companion. She chose to live on Serenity on purpose, she knew Mal's reputation as a war hero turned outlaw, an honorable thief living free and likes that, she's always trying to steer Mal's morals, inserting herself in things, she wants to join the crew and have voice. Mal may hate her job, but he hates the idea of Inara in danger. So, he pushes her away. The crew are all misfits.
River realized the team needed a distraction, and provided one. But the team was so distracted by her distraction that they failed to take advantage of it.
Probably my least favorite episode. I don't dislike it, and there are parts of it that I really like (esp. most all of Kaylee's part), and I also enjoyed seeing Badger again; but a lot of the rest (esp. Mal) seems forced to me, and also just a bit … troubling.
The theme of Firefly is civilized values versus frontier values – frontier values are better. Civilized values are represented by the snobby feudal class system on display at the party, the Companions and Atherton Wing. The geisha-like Companion institution is designed to protect upper class prostitutes from the s*xual exploitation inherent in this class system, revealed by Wing treating Inara like property. Mal motivated by frontier values of respect for people's rights, protects her. Atherton, an upper-class dandy, has had an expensive education in rapier fighting that lower class people can't afford, and he uses it to legally kill anyone he doesn't like, using the archaic duelling code. Mal is able to win only by Inara distracting him. Mal lets Atherton live, unlike Ath, his frontier values don't let him kill a helpless man.
Companions being high class is not so odd. In Firefly, Companions are more like Geisha in the Japanese feudalistic period. Trained in music, story telling, dance, conversation as well as love making.
Although it was slated for season 2, there is some significant information that would add context to Mal's relationship with Inara. Not sure if it's too early to bring it up…not exactly a spoiler since they don't reveal the information in the series…but maybe someone else can give spoiler guidance here. TBH – I wish I had known, because it fills in a lot of blanks with how Inara interacts with the crew.
I'm glad your enjoying the show , it may be hard to believe but really does get better from here. I always love Kaylee becoming the center of attention at the ball.
In my opinion, Mal hates the fact that Inara is a prostitute because he sees it as degrading. He loves her and doesn’t want her to continue degrading herself by having sex for money. Atherton sees her as a possession he can own. There’s the difference between the ways the two men insult her. One insults her out of love and the other out of selfish desire.
Atherton made the mistake of seeing Inara as a Companion, but not a person. It's also possible to take on a job simply to have the income & therefor not have much, if any, overlap with who one is as a person. However, when one chooses a career because they enjoy it & find it fulfilling that occupation does reflect who one is as a person. Rewatch all of the scenes of Inara working as a Companion & tell me that she doesn't see value in her work. Being a Companion is part of who she is as a person. She's a Companion because of what she can do for her clients & their well being. Who Inara is plays a strong role in what sort of Companion she is & which clients she chooses. If we had seen what Atherton was like when he was alone with Inara, perhaps we'd have a better idea of why she was contracting with him (he obviously has issues). ❤?????
I like this episode. Not exactly one of my favorites, but it's up there. It really shows how much alike Inara and Mal are, as they both take jobs from "psychotic lowlifes" (albeit from different levels of society).
Companions can be tought of as geishas. Like them, they aren't just prostitutes, and also like hem, they have a high social standing.
There is no difference between Disrespecting what people choose to do for a living or with their lives and disrespecting them as a person.
The Firefly theme song was actually fleshed out into a whole song years ago. I think you can still hear it, "Mal's Song album version".

I prayed for you sweetie. I'm glad you are fast becoming a browncoat.

The basis of this show is that on Earth china and the US became the major powers and combined thus the combination of chinese and english language.

5:57 And why would we? These are women that dont respect themselves, much less the men in their lives.

The old man who saves Kaylee from the mean girls deserves a medal.

Kaylee is the Princes of Serenity!
