No Ring of Power was a dumpster fire. Commercially, critically, with the fan base, and with the casual mainstream viewers. To spend that much money to produce that result is objectively a dumpster fire on every level.
I would say that rings of power was a miserable failure in nearly every category especially commercially due to the rather hilarious fact that only 37% of viewers actually finished it. One of these days I would love to do a live discussion with you about why you liked it since maybe that might elucidate why you didn’t hate it.
It takes a special type of person that can translate such a vast story to screen. Peter Jackson is one such person who did what most thought impossible. What makes a person like this special is they actually plan in advance before shooting begins. Without planning a budget will skyrocket due to reshoots and story creep and that is how you end up with $20 Million a episode.
Basically, the great original Scifi Stories are scientists talking in rooms. Exploding starships are Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica which belong to the genre of space opera, not scifi.
Rings of Power might be considered a dumpster fire by Amazon given the low ratings (it went out of the Top 10 ridiculously quickly) and that there is no buzz surrounding it when it's Season 2 was supposed to come out this year. (I don't know if this is still the case as there hasn't been trailer yet)
What always needs to be remembered in cases like this is simple: Executives aren't writers. They're not. They're executives. They're numbers and sales people.
And exeuctives want a return on investment that's as certain as possible. So they're always trying to come up with simple formulas that they think will somehow be a formula for success. What executives see here is "big name series" and "well-known showrunners" and "big budget" and "sci fi thing" means "cash."
They neither have the mindset, nor the knowledge to understand art or proper storytelling. That's why they make dumb decisions like this.
And then it all falls on the writers. Nothing is impossible to make good. But some things are a lot harder than others. And harder means you need a more skilled writer to pull it off.
I think RoP could have been a lot better. Was it like “decent”? I mean MAYBE. But they had the story already written for them. It could have been GREAT, it could have been a layup. But they just screwed the pooch and tried to do their own thing and I think that it backfired.
Funny enough when I heard they where doing this adaptation I was for sure they where going to go where they wanted to go in The Dark Forest like showing the panic and hedonism at the Droplet Attack 200 years in the future.
This series isnt unfilmable. The chinese did a great adaptation, though it was arguably a bit too long and drawn out. It could be really good in the first season, but book 2 is where things really pop off and have huge potential cultural moments.
But the first part could easily get really big. Not like star wars, its not an adventure series. But "you're bugs" could easily become the next "winter is coming" in the public popular consciousness. If it was done well.
Rings of power halfway decent? That was legitimately the worst show ive ever seen. Coupdnt finish any single episode without falling asleep. Im not even being hyperbolic.
It already failed?

I wanted to watch it and can't find it. And I used the search icon…
I'm so glad I watched the Tencent version of the show first. I really enjoyed the show and now I want to continue with the books.

In my opinion there mot even good at adapting stuff
How is it a fail already? I like what I’ve watched so far. Pretty good show.
Your guy you fanboy over, PJ, says they’re good writers when they want to be
